The Green Synagogue (Temporarily closed)

The Green Synagogue of Rēzekne is the oldest wooden building in the city (built in 1845) and the only one of the former 11 synagogues that has survived to the present day. It is a unique gem of historic wooden architecture located in the heart of Rēzekne’s old town and is a must-see for visitors.

Renovated in 2016, the Green Synagogue now offers visitors the opportunity to explore its unique interior, including an underground genizah and a traditional oven used for baking matzah — unleavened bread prepared for the Passover holiday.

On the second floor, visitors can view a digital photo exhibition about the history of the Jewish community in Rēzekne and Jewish-owned properties, a collection of Jewish ritual objects — a Torah pointer (etzba), tallit, tefillin, Torah scrolls, 19th-century prayer books — as well as the documentary film “Survival Syndrome” about the Jews of Rēzekne.

The synagogue also houses a small library with spiritual literature on Jewish history and traditions and offers an interactive educational program, “From Purim to Hanukkah.”
