A gem of modern architecture – the non-formal education center for children and youth “Zeimuļs”, opened on September 1, 2012. “Zeimuļs” is a place where the young, active and creative potential of the city meets.
During the school year, approximately 80 groups of interest is offered for the young in the center. The architect of the building, Rasa Kalniņa, used Latvian characters and symbols in its design, but the main construction materials of the building are concrete, metal, glass and wood.
There are 5 floors in total, with a total area of 4,490 m2. The center stands out with the bold, unusual solution of the building – sloping roof planes and towers covered with a “green carpet” – rooftops made of grass. Such a covering has several advantages, it is not only aesthetically attractive, but also reduces heat loss and energy consumption in the cold winter months, also reduces the cooling load, provides rainwater drainage and sound insulation. Visually, the towers of the building resemble two pencils decorated with white symbols.
The specific architecture of the centre is best viewed from the nearby castle mound – go and see for yourself!
