➤ The final night of the philosopher Socrates’ life – a time when, awaiting the morning and his execution, he confronts the eternal questions of freedom of choice. While Socrates prepares to accept his fate, his wife secretly arranges an escape, while the prison guard who agrees to help him attempts to fulfil his own unfulfilled dream. This is an emotionally powerful story about human conscience, duty and the price of freedom. The characters’ conversations encourage reflection on the frightening roots of fear, hatred and war – issues that remain highly relevant today – as well as on how a person’s character can change under the influence of power and circumstances. To emphasise the relevance of the play’s themes to events in the world today, the visual style of the production has deliberately been created in an abstract, timeless manner, without being tied to any particular historical period.

➤ The University of Latvia Student Theatre was founded in 1946. Since 1993, its artistic director has been Visvaldis Klintsons, who has directed productions in a wide range of genres. The theatre’s productions have been performed on stages throughout Latvia and abroad. The theatre regularly participates in amateur theatre competitions, as well as local and international festivals and events, and has received numerous awards over the years. The theatre’s aim is to provide its members with opportunities for creative self-expression. Students, graduates and employees of the University of Latvia come together to develop their skills and explore new forms of artistic expression.
