Imants Lancmanis – painting exhibition “Bible Stories”
The author, Imants Lancmanis describes the theme of his exhibition as follows: “The Bible is a collection of humanity’s spiritual insights, containing both depictions of purely human passions, virtues and vices, as well as divinely inspired revelations. The noble teachings of the New Testament on love for one’s neighbor, compassion, and kindness have the power to profoundly transform human morality and people’s understanding of good and evil.
Today’s dramatic events in the world urge a return to the truths of the Bible, to recognize parallels with what is happening around us, to seek meaning and explanation. At the same time, it inspires a return to depicting biblical events. Although art history is full of brilliant representations of biblical themes, the opportunity to find new expressions for them remains enticing. Christ’s teaching is timeless and universal—every nation may bring its own understanding and distinct system of imagery. Christ becomes one of us, and the setting of ancient Judea with its palms and deserts transforms into the green meadows of Latvia.”
